Varell (noble family)

Varell is the name of an extinct Franconian knight family .

Margrave Christian succeeded the branch of the Franconian Hohenzollern in the Principality of Bayreuth , which had died out with his predecessor, Margrave Georg Friedrich . He appointed Friedrich Hilderich von Varell as Chancellor of the Principality. Friedrich Hilderich von Varell (* 1566; † May 30, 1616) was raised to hereditary nobility in 1599. His father was Edo Hilderich and the family came from the region of the Lutheran Frisian town of Jever or Varel . Edo Hilderich, who also called himself Edo Hildericus von Varel, claimed to be descended from the Jever chiefs. Edo Hilderich or Edo Hillrichs was professor of theology and Hebrew language at the University of Altdorf since 1581 . The Varellweg in Bayreuth was named after him.

Friedrich Hilderich von Varell received from the margrave repudiated fiefs as gifts and a. in St. Johannis , Colmdorf , Mistelgau and Bühl . He acquired Untersteinach and Maierhofen from the Guttenbergers , Burghaig and Grünwöhr (in Kulmbach ) from the Waldenfelsern and Kleinziegenfeld from the Counts of Lynar . He further consolidated his position by marrying the von Feilitzsch and Wallenrode families . The now knightly family was organized in the knightly canton of Gebürg .

The last male bearer of the name was Georg Adam von Varell (born June 28, 1709 in Untersteinach; † November 6, 1765 in Untersteinach) who took part in various wars in his military career and was promoted to Lieutenant General Field Marshal. He commanded u. a. from 1752 to 1757 an infantry regiment that took part in the Battle of Roßbach in the Seven Years' War . He was married to Anna, born Heusslein von Eußenheim . After his death, Untersteinach Castle reverted to the Guttenberg family and had various uses, including the seat of the castle brewery from 1869. In a dilapidated condition, it was demolished in 1982.
