List of regiments of the Frankish Reichskreis

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Frankish imperial circle consisted of the spiritual principalities ( Würzburg , Bamberg , Eichstätt ), the margravates of Brandenburg-Ansbach and -Kulmbach, but also numerous free imperial cities , especially Nuremberg , Rothenburg ob der Tauber . However, there were also numerous smaller territories in the district. The Frankish regiments were among the permanent troops within the imperial troops , despite the great territorial and confessional fragmentation. In the Palatinate War of Succession , the Franconian district of Saxe-Gotha took on troops in order to fulfill its obligations. In 1694 the Franconian District maintained a standing army of 2,940 men on horseback and 5,703 men on foot. The teams for this standing circle army were provided by the individual district stands, to which clothing and armament were largely left, which led to the much-mocked, colorful appearance of the troops. In the Seven Years' War the district fought against Prussia - but the Würzburg and Bamberg house regiments also fought against Prussia. With the sale of Brandenburg-Ansbach and Brandenburg-Bayreuth by Margrave Karl Alexander to Prussia, Prussia established a regiment of hussars.

Explanation of the system

The following listing of the regiments, including years and numbering, is based on Ticino. The numbering of the infantry regiments was supplemented with No. 1-3 according to Bleckwenn. This is followed by the names of the regiment chiefs or the name (possibly name of the commander).

Meaning of the symbols used: "*" = foundation, "†" = dissolution, ">" = whereabouts, "=" = double function as a standing regiment of an imperial estate.
