Königshofen fortress

The fortress Königshofen is a former castle and later palace complex at the northeast corner of the old town (winery road 61) of Bad Königshofen in the grave box, in the district of Rhön-grave field in Bavaria .

history

The castle, mentioned in 1245, was probably owned by the local lords, the Counts of Henneberg . In 1518-20 the prince-bishops Lorenz von Bibra and Konrad II von Thüngen converted the castle into a palace. It is a two-storey, three-winged building with the main wing on the eaves in ashlar , saddle roof with stepped gables and lower courtyard wings in quarry stone . The castle was probably damaged in a city fire in 1562. As the Würzburg official castle, the fortress remained in the possession of the Würzburg bishopric until 1803 and was then razed . In 1856 the rent office was built on the site of the castle with the remains of the castle.

Only a remnant of the wall remains of the former castle complex.

people

  • The fortress commander Franz Anton von Dalberg (* October 16, 1669; † February 27, 1725, buried in Königshofen) was a son of the President of the Imperial Court of Justice Philipp Franz Eberhard von Dalberg (1635–1693) and his wife, Anna Katharina Franziska von Dalberg (1644– 1679), a daughter of Johann XXV. von Dalberg (for the family relationships see here ). Franz Anton was canon in Speyer from 1680 to 1711 , then resigned from this office and became major general and commander of the Königshofen fortress.
