Burgstall Lure

The Burgstall Lure , also called Burg Lauer , is an abandoned medieval hilltop castle on a hill above the village in the hallway marker "Schloßberg" about 150 meters southwest of the church in Burglauer in the Rhön-Grabfeld district in Bavaria .

history

The castle, mentioned in the 11th century, was probably built by the noble Lurensis family, who lived in Burglauer in 1108, and initially it was a stone house or a residential tower , possibly surrounded by a palisade fence or a simple wall. According to the historian Heinrich Wagner (Historischer Atlas von Kissingen), the castle was a very early attested administrative center in Würzburg. In 1225 the castle is said to have been in ruins and was rebuilt by Heinrich von Lure and his son. The Würzburg bishopric enfeoffed various noble families with the rule of the castle, for example the lords of Steinau called Steinrück from 1431 to 1520 .

It is uncertain whether the castle was destroyed by the Bildhäuser Haufen, to which numerous Burglau farmers belonged, in the course of the Peasants' War . Presumably the decaying castle was used as a quarry.

description

Björn-Uwe Abels describes the castle in his 1975 guide to prehistoric and early historical monuments as follows: “... the mostly overbuilt and demolished castle stables can only be recognized by a semicircle projecting to the northwest, 20 by 10 meters with steep slopes. Cellar vaults are partially cut off on the northeast slope of the Burgstall. "
