Steineck Castle

The castle Steineck , even Steineckke or Nordeck mentioned, which is ruin of a high medieval hilltop castle on 350  m above sea level. NN near Steinach in the municipality of Burglauer in the Lower Franconian district of Rhön-Grabfeld in Bavaria .

location

The castle lies east of the Franconian Saale on a mountain spur protruding from the steeply sloping slope . From here the Saale valley with the road running along the river could be monitored well. The location chosen for the defense of the facility was less favorable: attackers could easily see and shoot at the castle from the higher slope.

history

The castle was first mentioned in documents in 1201, when King Philip of Swabia handed it over to the Bishop of Würzburg Konrad von Querfurt . The Steineck ruins were controversial in the hands of the Henneberg family clan, but in 1240 Count Poppo VII was able to secure the holdings of Talburg Steinaha and Steinecke by contract. The last mention was made in 1443 as the castle stable , with which a certain Caspar von Ostheim was enfeoffed . Tradition has it that the castle burned down on Christmas Eve.

investment

The castle was divided into a bailey and a main castle . The outer bailey was preceded by a deep, still recognizable neck ditch. Remnants of the wall at the front of the main castle suggest a shield wall . Only small remnants of walls and traces of ramparts and ditches have been preserved from the castle .
