The fortification near Rappershausen is an abandoned early medieval rampart in the Oberau forest department about 1150 meters east of the local church in Rappershausen , a district of the Hendungen community in the Rhön-Grabfeld district in Bavaria .

history

The prehistoric archaeologist Björn-Uwe Abels describes the three-part fortification, which is located on a hill extending from south-west to north-east, the south-east slope of which gradually tapers off and the north-west slope drops steeply to a brook valley, as a 200 meter long and 45 meter wide system on its long side bounded by the steep slope, which is followed by a 6-meter-wide and 1.5-meter-high wall with a 4-meter-wide trench in front , which curves over the spur and finally runs a few meters parallel to the western slope.

The former spokesman for the archaeological working group, Walter Jahn from Ostheim, summarizes: The old castle near Rappershausen was a three-part fortification made up of walls (ramparts) and ditches (two-phase). It originated in the early Middle Ages (800 to 1000 AD). The old castle near Rappershausen was an important early castle for the early medieval land development.
