Origin and Distribution

The name-giving headquarters is Rabenstein Castle in Franconian Switzerland . They have been documented since 1188. The Rabensteiners were ministerials of the nobles von Waischenfeld . They were also followers of the Schluesselberger . How long they served as castle men at Rabenstein Castle is unknown. They later built mansions in Christanz and Moschendorf .

In 1557 the Lords of Rabenstein acquired Rabenstein Castle, where they were once named. Daniel von Rabenstein rebuilt the castle in 1570. In the Thirty Years War , however, it was completely destroyed by imperial troops because the lord of the castle, Hans Christoph von Rabenstein, was on the side of the Swedes. After the war, between 1648 and 1728, only smaller buildings were restored next to the farm yard. As part of the imperial free knighthood , the Rabensteiners belonged to the knight canton of the Franconian knight circle .

From 1696 to 1718 Christian Friedrich von Rabenstein built the new Adlitz Palace . With the death of Peter Johann Albrecht von Rabenstein in 1742, the family died out.

Secondary lines

The von Rabenstein are considered to be the builders of the nearby Rabeneck Castle , which was built as an independent castle before 1200 and was first mentioned in a document in 1217. The Lords of Rabeneck are mentioned several times in the 13th century, Ulrich became a citizen of Munich in 1242 and founded the Rabenegger patrician family there . The Schlüsselberg family later received shares in Rabeneck Castle.

Indications like the raven in the coat of arms indicate that the Rabensteiner von Wirsberg also emerged from this family.
