The family of the dog from Wenkheim (also just dog (t) or from Wenckheim ) was a Franconian noble family .

history

The family owned properties in Wenkheim , Atterode , Schweina and sat at Altenstein Castle . The family was organized in the knightly canton of Odenwald .

Individual family members rose to high positions in the Teutonic Order . The most famous person was Georg Hund von Wenkheim (1520–1572), Grand Master of the Teutonic Order (1566–1572). Bernhard Hund von Wenkheim was chef in Frankfurt in 1513 .

Burghard II. Dog Wenkheim hijacked Martin Luther when he on his way back from the Diet of Worms , where Emperor Charles V , the imperial ban , passed had imposed on him on May 4, 1521 Castle Altenstein, and brought him to the Wartburg , where the inaugurated electoral bailiff Hans von Berlepsch was already waiting for him. Luther spent almost a year there as Junker Jörg and translated the New Testament into German.

Eberhard Friedrich Hund von Wenkheim (1647–1722) was the last man on Altenstein, which then passed to the House of Saxony-Meiningen .

The coat of arms shows a black- bridled, silver horse's trunk on a red background. The helmet covers are red and silver. The motif of the coat of arms is repeated in the crest.
