Wenkheim is a district of the municipality Werbach in the Main-Tauber district in Baden-Württemberg .

Geographical location

Wenkheim is about seven kilometers northeast of Werbach in the Welzbachtal . Wenkheim is, with a distance of only two kilometers from the Bavarian border, the most easterly place in the municipality. The place has 645 inhabitants (December 31, 2013) and with 1193 hectares is the largest district in the municipality of Werbach.

The former municipality of Wenkheim includes the village of Wenkheim, the Neumühle , Öl- und Sägmühle , Seemühle farms and the Mehlen settlement .

Protected areas

In Wenkheim there are parts of the Welzbachtal water protection area (WSG no. 128131), which was established by ordinance of February 3, 2004 and covers 2,442.43 hectares.

history

middle Ages

In the year 800 Wenkheim was first mentioned as Wencheim . In 1149 the place was called Wegengheim . It is believed that the gentlemen from Wenkheim, who later sat in Thuringia , originally came from here.

Modern times

From 1625 the place was part of the Grafschaft Löwenstein-Wertheim . In 1673 the French burned down Wenkheim Castle. In 1750 a large part of Wenkheim burned down and in 1776 the place was badly devastated in a storm. In 1806 Wenkheim came under the sovereignty of the Grand Duchy of Baden .

On December 31, 1973 Wenkheim came to the community of Werbach.

There is a Roman Catholic parish of St. Maria in Wenkheim . This belongs to the pastoral care unit Großrinderfeld-Werbach in the deanery Tauberbischofsheim .

Jewish community of Wenkheim

The Jewish community of Wenkheim was founded in the 16th century. The place is known for its Jewish history; Jews are mentioned for the first time in 1576 and 1591. In addition to the former synagogue in Wenkheim , the Jewish community of Wenkheim owned a Jewish school , a ritual bath and the Wenkheim Jewish cemetery . The synagogue was demolished during the November pogroms in 1938 . By 1940 more than half of the Jewish population had emigrated (22 to the USA , 8 to Palestine ). On 22 October 1940, the last 11 Jewish residents were Wenkheims while the Wagner-Bürckel action in the Camp de Gurs deported .

Welzbachtal cycle path

The Welzbachtalradweg connects the place after about eight kilometers in a southwestern direction in Werbach with the Taubertalradweg . The Welzbachtalradweg leads in a north-easterly direction to Oberaltertheim . From there there is a connection via other cycle paths to the Main cycle path near Würzburg.
