history

Brunntal was first mentioned in 1222 when a donation to the Neumünster in Würzburg was recorded. A local nobility of their own is mentioned in an exchange document from 1352; The Bronnbach monastery also had property in Brunntal at this time. Around 1537 the Landgraves of Leuchtenberg owned properties in Brunntal.

At the beginning of the Thirty Years War the plague raged in Brunntal and left only seven people alive. A wayside shrine from 1624 on the boundary of Wenkheim reminds of this.

Brunntal belonged to Kurmainz until 1803 , then briefly to the Principality of Leiningen and was finally incorporated into the Grand Duchy of Baden in 1806 . As part of the Baden-Württemberg municipal reform, the new municipality of Werbach in the Main-Tauber district was formed on December 31, 1973 from the previously independent municipalities of Brunntal, Wenkheim , Werbach and Werbachhausen .

The municipality and almost all households participated in a major village renovation from 1984 to 1994, financially supported by the state of Baden-Württemberg . With the fountain square and the wayside shrine square, two local centers were created. In 1992 Brunntal took part in the state competition Our village should become more beautiful and achieved first place (out of 26 applicants). When he participated again in 1993, Brunntal came third.
