The Roman Catholic parish church of St. Maria was built in 1823 and is located in Wenkheim in the Main-Tauber district in Baden-Württemberg . The church is consecrated after the Virgin Mary and the patronage day is August 15th ( Assumption of Mary ).

history

In earlier times, the branches in Brunntal and Hof Baiertal, as well as Steinbach, were owned by the parish of Wenkheim. The gentlemen of Wenkheim and later the gentlemen Hund von Wenkheim formed the local nobility of Wenkheim and were owed to the count of Wertheim as a feud. The bishop of Würzburg was the ecclesiastical supremacy. Under these circumstances, Wenkheim got caught between the fronts during the Reformation: Driven several times, the Catholic priest finally found refuge in Brunntal. After the Thirty Years' War, Wenkheim was largely Protestant. This only changed after the Peace of Westphalia, when the situation in 1624 was restored and the ecclesiastical possessions were restored to the Catholics.

In the Thirty Years' War, the Steinbach branch was the first to be lost. Due to the poor road conditions, the Brunntal branch was ceded to the parish of Werbachhausen in 1914. At the request of the municipality, Hof Baiertal was handed over to Großrinderfeld in 1954 .

There is only sparse information about earlier places of worship. The first Wenkheim church was mentioned in a document in 1258, but without mentioning the church patron and only with a vague description. The previous building of today's church was completed in 1823 and was presumably on the site of today's church. After 30 years this was already dilapidated and was demolished. In 1852/53 the new church was built in neo-Gothic style and consecrated in September 1853.

Today the choir in the church tower is used as a sacristy. The church was cleared during the renovation in the 1970s and shaped according to the post-conciliar liturgy. The figures of saints were placed in the church again after the last renovation in 2000. The pulpit, the communion bench, the cross and the high altar have since disappeared without a trace. In the sacristy, the former choir, the sacrament house was uncovered. It shows a crucifixion scene with a knight on the left and a lady on the right, presumably the donor couple. Despite the severe damage, this representation is still easy to see.

After Pastor Wörner's death in 1952, no pastor was resident in Wenkheim. The parish was first looked after by Werbachhausen, later by Großrinderfeld and since 1999 by Werbach. The pastoral care unit Werbach with the communities Werbach, Gamburg , Werbachhausen with Brunntal and Wenkheim was finally established in 2001.

Since a reform of the deanery on January 1, 2008, the Marienkirche has belonged to the pastoral care unit Großrinderfeld-Werbach of the deanery Tauberbischofsheim in the Archdiocese of Freiburg .

Church building and equipment

particularities

Special features are the bell and the church tower. The church tower was once the keep of Wenkheim Castle, which was otherwise destroyed in 1673 . The ground floor of the tower is owned by the Catholic parish, the rest of the tower and the bells belong to the political community. The bell is used by both denominations and since electrification has also been operated from the Protestant church.

Way of the Cross
