Sigmund von Pölnitz

Hieronymus Christoph Franz Sigmund Maria Freiherr von Pölnitz (born September 28, 1901 in Munich ; † April 23, 1978 in Bamberg ) was a German Catholic clergyman , cathedral capitular in Bamberg and director of the Diocesan Museum in Bamberg .

family

Sigmund von Pölnitz came from the originally Saxon - Vogtland noble family Pölnitz , which also settled in Franconia from the 17th century . His ancestors included the Electoral Saxon Chancellor Bernhard von Pölnitz , the Electoral Brandenburg Major General Gerhard Bernhard von Pölnitz , the Electoral Saxon Reichstag envoy Hans Georg von Pöllnitz and Karl Ludwig von Pöllnitz , a confidante of King Friedrich II .

He was the second of four children from the marriage of Maximilian von Pölnitz (1862-1936) and Gisela, née Countess von Gatterburg, baroness on Retz (1869-1914). One of his brothers was the historian Götz Freiherr von Pölnitz . In 1963 he adopted his sister's son, Winfrid von und zu Egloffstein .

Life

Von Pölnitz studied at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich . As a student he became a member of the Catholic student association Rheno-Bavaria Munich in the KV . He completed his studies with the graduation to the Dr. theol. et Dr. phil. from. In 1924 he entered the Benedictine Abbey of St. Boniface in Munich and was given the religious name Winfrid . He was ordained a priest in the Freising Cathedral in 1928 .

In 1938 he left the order for health reasons and was incardinated as a secular priest in the Archdiocese of Bamberg . From 1944 to 1948 von Pölnitz was first parish administrator, then city pastor of Höchstadt an der Aisch . From 1948 to 1958 he was pastor of the parish Herz Jesu in Erlangen . He was the one who initiated the establishment of the Bubenreuth violin maker settlement. In 1952 he was awarded the title of Archbishop Spiritual Council . On September 4, 1958, he was appointed cathedral capitular of the Bamberg diocese .

In Bamberg he was first chairman of the diocesan charity association , member of the liturgical commission, advisor for archive maintenance, for film, radio and television, diocesan pilgrim leader, prosynodal judge of the archbishop's official council (1958), promoter iustitiae (1959), spiritual director of the St. Heinrich newspaper , Head of the St. Otto publishing house (1968), Summus Custos des Hohen Domes (1970), first director of the Bamberg Diocesan Museum - as a church historian, he was entrusted with its development and was director of the Maria-Hilf-Anstalt in Bamberg. 1964 was him by Pope Paul VI. bestowed the title of Papal House Prelate . From 1959 to 1974 he was a member of the board of directors of the Germanic National Museum in Nuremberg . In 1966 he was appointed honorary professor for religious folklore at the Philosophical-Theological University of Bamberg .

The cathedral capitular of Pölnitz was buried in the family cemetery not far from Hundshaupten Castle .
