Bernhard von Pölnitz , also Pöllnitz (born July 4, 1569 in Schwarzbach , † August 5, 1628 in Goseck ) was a politician from the Electoral Saxony. He was Chancellor and Privy Councilor to Elector Johann Georg I of Saxony in Dresden and Chief Court Judge and owner of Goseck Castle near Naumburg (Saale) .

Life

He was the son of Hans Bruno von Pölnitz auf Schwarzbach and Neuensorge (1535–1592) and Barbara Münch from Münchenbernsdorf . His father sent him to the University of Jena , from 1586 to the University of Helmstedt , from 1590 to the University of Altdorf and from 1592 back to Jena. From 1593 he stayed in Cologne , then three months in Marburg and then went on a study trip of several months to Switzerland, France and Italy together with Jacob von Grünthal and Georg von Nißmitz . He then stayed in Hungary until 1596 before returning home. Half a year after his return, he was appointed chamberlain for the sons of the Elector of Saxony. In 1598 he became a councilor of appeal and in this function traveled in 1600 to see Emperor Rudolf II in Prague. On the way a shy horse smashed his right thigh.

In 1601 he was appointed court councilor of the Electorate of Saxony. His younger brother Hans Georg became Minister of the Electoral Saxony. His sister Amelie was married to Jacob von Grünthal .

Bernhard von Pölnitz was married three times. First marriage to Ursula von Nißmitz (oo 1598 † 1607), daughter of Georg von Nißmitz on Nebra and Birkigt . In 1609, Katharina von Hoym from the house of Hoym-Ermsleben († 1620) married the widow of Franz von Königsmarck , the owner of Goseck Castle. As a result, he came into the possession of the important castle with which he and his wife were enfeoffed for the first time in 1609 by the Electoral Saxon feudal chancellery in Dresden. During his time, the monastery church was converted into a castle chapel. His third marriage was in 1621 with Amelie von Rauchhaupt , daughter of Rudolph von Rauchhaupt auf Hohenthurm , widow of Christoph von Wiehe auf Burgscheidungen .

Bernhard had two sons from his first marriage, Christian Julius († 1662) and Hans Christoph von Pölnitz († 1680), who continued the family tradition and inherited the extensive property.

His funeral sermon was given on September 1, 1628 by the pastor and superintendent of Freyburg Magister Christoph Dauderstadt. On September 3, 1628 he was buried in the castle church of Goseck. His epitaph is also there.
