Altengronau moated castle

The moated castle Altengronau is a Niederungsburg , which is located in the district Altengronau in the municipality Sinntal in the Main-Kinzig-Kreis in Hesse .

location

The remains of the moated castle are located at around 225 meters above sea level in the south-west of Altengronau, in a strategically favorable position at the connection between the two rivers Sinn and Gronau .

history

The hilltop castle of the Lords of Hutten zu Gronau, located on the Frauenberg, was badly damaged in a feud with the Count of Hanau in 1492 and left to decay. The feud was preceded by the illegal collection of a tax that Philip I (the younger) of Hanau- Munzenberg demanded from his subjects in the Schwarzenfels court , as well as from the Hutt servants. Large parts of the Hessian nobility then declared their solidarity with the von Hutten gentlemen; further feuds of the knighthood from Franconia followed.

As a result, Eitel Sebastian von Hutten began in 1506 to build the Altengronau moated castle (also: "new house") as a valley castle. The building was placed under the protection of the Hessian Landgrave Philip the Magnanimous in 1527 , but it was already destroyed in the Thirty Years War .

The remains of the building later served as the basis for a paper mill. With the construction of the Jossa – Wildflecken railway line , these were incorporated into the Gerhäuser marble works . The main house and fruit store of the moated castle can still be seen today, as can the moat and remains of the curtain wall.

investment

The square area was protected by two moats that were largely leveled today and accessible via a drawbridge . In addition to the spacious main house, a half-timbered building with a half- hipped roof , the complex had barns and stables, as well as powder houses and a fruit store with a stair tower from 1551.

Todays use

After the stone processing plant closed, the main building fell apart. The former fruit store is now privately owned.
