Wilhelm von Bibra (* 1442 ; † August 28, 1490 in Verona ) was a knight of the golden spur and envoy of the emperor at the court of Pope Innocent VIII.

Biographical data

Wilhelm acted as the council of Emperor Friedrich III. and from his son Maximilians I. In 1483, 1487 and 1490 he traveled three times as envoy to Rome, the last two times to Pope Innocent VIII. He also had the position of court master and councilor of the archbishop and elector of Cologne Hermann von Hessen inside. Hermann's half-brother Lorenz turned to Pope Innocent VIII with a letter of recommendation in 1487 when Wilhelm was sent to the Holy See on behalf of the Archbishop. In 1490 Wilhelm fell ill on his return journey from Rome and died in the palace of the Pellegrini family. Wilhelm's tombstone can be seen in the Pellegrini Chapel in Verona. Originally the grave slab was on the ground, it was only erected on the wall in summer 1804.

Wilhelm von Bibra was a member of the noble Franconian family von Bibra . In his family there were high church dignitaries who, as church princes, achieved the rank of imperial princes, e. B. Conrad III. von Bibra , Prince-Bishop of Würzburg (1540–1544). Wilhelm's half-brother, Lorenz von Bibra , was also Prince-Bishop of Würzburg from 1495 to 1519. As such, Lorenz von Bibra tried to get other family members to hold offices within his diocese of Würzburg.
