Pretlack
The barons of Pretlack (more rarely: Prettlack ) were originally an East Prussian and later a Hessian noble family. The most important family member was the Hesse-Darmstadt general Johann Rudolf Victor von Pretlack .
origin
The family originally came from Prätlack in the East Prussian district of Gerdauen , where they also owned the Moltheinen and Gross-Sobrost estates. The documented line of trunks begins with Caspar von Pretlack (around 1589–1644), master of the Desdau estate in Saxony . His son Philipp Friedrich Christoph von Pretlack served as colonel during the Thirty Years' War . At the end of the war he settled in Uchte . By marrying Margarethe Amalie von Fullen , he was given the small lordship of Eystrup and the inheritance office of the Uchte office as a Hessian fief , which ensured him a decent living. Of the numerous offspring (nine sons alone), however, only the firstborn could be cared for in this way. Most of the other sons aspired to a military career, as was customary in the official nobility of that time.
Two of his sons rose to the highest military positions in the service of Darmstadt Landgrave Ernst Ludwig . As a close confidante, Johann Rudolf Victor von Pretlack was able to acquire a number of Hesse-Darmstadt fiefs, including the former Rodenstein property in Fränkisch-Crumbach in the Odenwald and the village of Echzell with the Haushof estate in Upper Hesse .
Johann Rudolf's descendants were mostly also in the service of Hesse-Darmstadt as colonels, generals, chief forester or chamberlain. His son Ludwig Christian von Pretlack was able to marry a morganatic daughter of the Landgrave, Countess Friederike von Eppstein . The male line died out in 1843 with Ludwig Friedrich Georg Franz von Pretlack . The property was inherited by his brother Karl Friedrich's daughters, Karoline, who married the lawyer and painter Kaspar Georg Wilhelm von Harnier, and Sophia, married to Julius Emil Friedrich Freiherr von Egloffstein . The estate, including the correspondence of Johann Rudolf von Pretlack, is now in the Hessian State Archives in Darmstadt .
