Baron Karl Friedrich Wilhelm von Erthal , also Karl Friedrich Wilhelm Freiherr von Erthal, Lord of Leuzendorf and Gochsheim , (born July 1, 1717 in Leuzendorf Castle ; † September 17, 1780 in Würzburg ) was Canon of Würzburg and Bamberg , provost of the Old Chapel zu Regensburg as well as President of the Spiritual Government, Vicar General and Privy Council .

Karl Friedrich Wilhelm von Erthal came from the old Franconian noble family Erthal and was the son of baron Karl Friedrich von Erthal zu Leuzendorf and Gochsheim and Magdalena Barbara von Schaumberg .

Life

By nomination of the turnar Franz Konrad Graf von Stadion, he received a domicellar qualifying at the Würzburg Cathedral . After he was confirmed and tonsured in Würzburg on August 4, 1729 , he swore on September 2, 1729. A few years later he also received a domicellar preparatory certificate in Bamberg and was sworn up there on July 19, 1736.

After completing his philosophical studies at the Würzburg University with a master's degree , in 1739 he undertook the study trip, which was obligatory for young aristocrats at the time, which led him to Italy, England, Holland and Flanders and Vienna. Thus it was with the difficult choice of Pope Benedict XIV. And also in the acts of choice for the Emperor Charles VII. And I. Franz present.

After that he served as an Electoral Mainz and highly princely bambergischer Chamberlain , Privy Councilor and bailiff to Burgebrach. Still as domicellar, in 1752 he set up a foundation at the Würzburg Reuerers to have holy masses read for those sentenced to death.

On October 26, 1755 he received the minor orders in Würzburg and on May 27, 1756 also the subdiaconate there , before he was accepted into the Würzburg cathedral chapter on October 29, 1756 and at about the same time also into the Bamberg cathedral chapter. The following year he was ordained a priest by Prince-Bishop Adam Friedrich von Seinsheim in the Würzburg Court Church.

On January 8, 1758, he was appointed president of the ecclesiastical government in Würzburg, and in the war year 1762 he visited the Ebern regional chapter and the associated monasteries. In 1767 the prince-bishop appointed him his vicar general in Würzburg and awarded him the rank of secret councilor. On August 28, 1773, he laid the foundation stone for the new parish church of St. Jakobus in Bad Kissingen as part of a solemn ceremony.

Elected as cantor by the Würzburg cathedral chapter on February 5, 1774 , he celebrated his anniversary as Würzburg canon on September 2, 1774. In the same year his cousin, the Elector and Archbishop Friedrich Karl Joseph von Erthal , also appointed him to the Electoral Mainz Privy Council.

In 1775 he resigned his Domizellarpräbende, which he had held since the resignation of his younger brother Georg Philipp Valentin von Erthal in 1748.

On January 27, 1780, he, who had also been provost of the old chapel in Regensburg since 1767, was elected provost of the Haug collegiate monastery and was confirmed in this office by the Pope on February 16, 1780.

Karl Friedrich Wilhelm von Erthal died on September 17, 1780 in his canon curia of pneumonia as the last of the Leuzendorfer line of the Erthal family. Previously, he had ensured that the male descendants of the daughters of his brother Georg Philipp Valentin von Erthal inherited the Leuzendorfer fiefdom of Würzburg.
