Abbess's tomb

Elisabeth von Künsberg (* 1425 ; † January 31, 1484 ) was abbess of the Himmelkron monastery from 1460 to 1484 .

She came from the von Künsberg family . Her father was Friedrich III. von Künsberg (1395–1429) on Altenkünsberg near Creußen , her mother is believed to come from the Voit von Rieneck family. There are four known brothers. Based on a missing tombstone, it is assumed that the cousin of Friedrich III. named Ulrich I from the Wernstein line was buried in the monastery. The grave slabs of his two sons Hans I (1418–1470) and Henry VII (1420–1473), who supported the abbess's building project, are present.

During the time of Abbess Elisabeth, there was evidence of brisk construction activity; Her family coat of arms, a silver curved tip on a blue background, can be found several times in the monastery. The most important building measure was probably the construction of the cloister with its many artistic elements in 1473 . The foundation of the cloister is carved in stone next to the entrance in the form of its coat of arms and an inscription. At the end of the cloister there is another coat of arms of the Künsberg in the vaulted ceiling, surrounded by 16 representations that represent religious affiliations in Europe. Investigations by Werner Bergmann assume that the coat of arms refers to a person close to the abbess. Elisabeth's epitaph was recovered during renovation work in the monastery church in 1909 and was later installed.
