The Lords of Heppenheim called vom Saal were a noble family that came from today's Gau-Heppenheim and owned a castle there. The family belongs to the nobility in the Rheinhessen and Palatinate region .

Family history

The family has its beginnings in the early 11th century and derives its name from the village of Gau-Heppenheim (formerly Heppenheim im Loch ), which also adopted its family coat of arms as part of the local coat of arms. The first named bearer of his name was Werner von Heppenheim († 1019).

Originally they only had the name "von Heppenheim" . Since the 14th century they owned the no longer existing "Saalhof" on the Alzeyer Obermarkt , as a fiefdom of the Electorate of the Palatinate, and named themselves "vom Saal" after this important building in the city . From this time on the family referred to themselves as "von Heppenheim called vom Saal" and their representatives often appear in the ecclesiastical and secular area of southwest Germany.

The following family members were Stadtschultheise von Alzey : Endres von Heppenheim, Ritter 1363, Endres von Heppenheim called vom Sale 1429, his son Anthis von Heppenheim 1470, Hermann von Heppenheim called Sale 1528.

With the brothers Johann von Heppenheim called vom Saal , cathedral dean in Mainz , as well as Chancellor of the University of Heidelberg († 1672) and Georg Anton von Heppenheim called vom Saal, Prince-Bishop of Würzburg officer and bailiff († 1684), the aristocratic family died out in the male line. Both had no offspring.

Her great aunt Anna von Heppenheim called vom Saal had married Philipp Erwein von der Leyen († 1593); their daughter Maria Barbara von der Leyen († 1631) married Georg von Schönborn († 1613). The latter are the parents of the Elector of Mainz Johann Philipp von Schönborn , the grandparents of Elector Lothar Franz von Schönborn , and the great-grandparents of the four Prince Bishops Johann Philipp Franz von Schönborn (Würzburg), Friedrich Karl von Schönborn (Würzburg and Bamberg), Franz Georg von Schönborn (Trier and Worms) and Damian Hugo Philipp von Schönborn-Buchheim (Speyer). Through them, the coat of arms of the Heppenheim called from the hall passed into the Schönborn family coat of arms and therefore also adorns the many churches and castles built by these bishops.

The headquarters in Gau-Heppenheim was destroyed by a lightning strike in 1766. From this castle there is still a beautiful coat of arms stone with the alliance coat of arms of Gottfried von Heppenheim called vom Saal and his wife Agatha Lerch von Dirmstein (sister of Caspar IV. Lerch ), the parents of the last two male family members.

Cathedral dean Johann von Heppenheim called vom Saal and his great cousin Elector Johann Philipp von Schönborn were the founders of the Catholic seminary in Mainz in 1660 .

In Worms Cathedral there is an artistically valuable epitaph of canon Eberhard von Heppenheim called vom Saal († 1559), with his full kneeling figure.
