In 788 the Mattonen donated goods to the Fulda monastery . Großwenkheim (and a small monastery there) was mentioned for the first time, still as Wenkheim . In a deed of donation from the year 842 Waccanheim is mentioned as a gift from an Eruuin to the Fulda Abbey. It was not until the 13th century that a distinction was made between Groß- (Maiori Weinghem) and Kleinwenkheim (Weynckheim minor). In the 14th century, the von Wenkheim family owned large estates in the area.

The former church was replaced in 1765 by the construction of the Church of the Assumption . Johann Peter Herrlein painted the church.

On January 1, 1972, Großwenkheim was incorporated into Münnerstadt.
