Bonifaz Geßner
Bonifaz Geßner (born November 17, 1699 in Großwenkheim , † June 11, 1770 in Münnerstadt ) was abbot of the Bildhausen monastery .
Life
Born in Großwenkheim, Bonifaz Geßner entered the Bildhausen Monastery in 1721 and became a priest in 1727. He had studied at the University of Würzburg and was able to teach philosophy and theology at the home school. He later became the chancellery director and, as such, was elected abbot in 1754.
Although the Seven Years' War fell during his term of office , which demanded a lot from the monastery, he was still able to appear as the client. In 1765 he began building the monumental baroque parish church of the Assumption of Mary in Großwenkheim, which was consecrated in 1772 after his death. He is shown in their ceiling painting. He also donated the high altar. Another testimony to his work is the garden pavilion (garden pallet) built in 1765/66 and still in existence today. The interior of the abbey building built by his predecessor Georg Kihn also goes back to him (late baroque staircase with rich stucco work).
