history

The construction of the Assumption Church began on September 25, 1765 on the initiative of Bonifaz Geßner , the abbot of the Cistercian monastery Maria Bildhausen . It replaced a previous building that was built around 1430.

The artistic design was entrusted to the painter Johann Peter Herrlein from Münnerstadt . He created the picture of the left side altar and, in 1768, the ceiling painting, a representation of the glorification of the Trinity.

The high altar made in Königshofen in the Grabfeld was donated by Abbot Bonifaz. His altarpiece was created in 1767 by the Bamberg painter Marquart Treu and shows Mary's death and ascension. The high altar itself, the production of which cost 700 Reichstaler , was assembled from cast parts by plasterer J. Michael Krieger from 1768 to 1771 and gilded by Nikolaus Amersbach in 1777. The two statues next to the altarpiece represent St. Benedict of Nursia (left of the altarpiece) and St. Bernhard von Clairvaux (to the right of the altarpiece).

On August 23, 1772 the church was consecrated by Bishop Gebsattel.
