Hermann III. from Kottenheim

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hermann III. von Kottenheim (more rarely also only Hermann III .; * probably in Kottenheim , today Markt Nordheim ; † 1447 in Heilsbronn ) was abbot of the Cistercian monastery in Ebrach from 1430 to 1437 .

Life

Hermann III. von Kottenheim was born in the second half of the 14th century or in the first quarter of the 15th century. The place of birth was probably the place Kottenheim near Markt Nordheim in what is now Middle Franconia , where his family had their headquarters. The names of the parents of the future abbot are not mentioned in the sources, nor are any siblings. Kottenheim probably entered the Ebrach monastery in the Steigerwald at a young age .

Here he rose first within the convent. At first he was provisional in Nuremberg and administered the Ebrach monastery courtyard there . Abbot Bartholomäus Fröwein sent Hermann to the Council of Basel in 1429 . In addition, the monk was often sent to Bohemia by his prelate to visit the Cistercian monasteries in this area and to promote exchanges with the abbey.

After the death of Bartholomäus Fröwein in 1430, the Ebrach convent elected Hermann as the new abbot Hermann III. After his election the young prelate received from the General Chapter of the Cistercians an exemption from the curia tax that his predecessor had to pay. The Abbot General and the Apostolic See also confirmed this exemption. In 1437 Hermann III resigned . and from then on lived in the cloister courtyard in Nuremberg. Shortly before his death he visited Heilsbronn Monastery and died here in 1447.
