Teteven (also Teteven transliterated Bulgarian Тетевен ) is a city in the same community and the Lovech Province in the north of Bulgaria .
The city is a tourist center and is under monument protection ( architecture reserve ), some houses have been declared cultural monuments. In addition, Teteven is one of the 100 national tourist objects in Bulgaria.

Teteven is nestled between the Teteven Balkans and the Wassiljowska Mountains, on both banks of the Beli Wit River . The city is located about 116 km northeast of the Bulgarian capital Sofia , 74 km southwest of Lovech , 60 km west of Trojan , 23 km southeast of Jablanitsa and 54 km east of Botevgrad .
history
The region around Teteven was settled in ancient times. In Thracian times the Serds lived here . The Romans later included this area in their Serdika strategy. The Elias Monastery (Sweti Ilija) dates from the Bulgarian Middle Ages.
The oldest evidence of settlement dates from 1421 under the name Tetevjan . It is believed that the city got its name from the family of the Boljars Tetjo (Tetjov Fortress) who settled in the area.
