The image of the city is shaped by the rock walls in the north, a visible part of the Highland Boundary Fault , which are 343 m high. Local hiking trails include Bracklinn Falls, the Meadows, Callander Crags and the Wood Walks. The city is on the Trossachs Bird of Prey Trail .

history

Battle of Callander

In 1645, during the Montrose campaigns , a battle took place at Callander between the Campbells of Argyll and the Atholls. The Campbells attacked the McGregors and McNabs for their allegiance to Montrose . During the siege of Castle Ample , word of 700 advancing Atholl men under Inchbrakie reached the Campbells. These withdrew in a southerly direction. But when the Campbells crossed a ford near the village of Callander, they were overtaken and forced to fight. Inchbrakie had part of his troops attacked, while another detachment secretly marched to a ford upstream near the present bridge. The ford was quickly crossed and the Campbells were unexpectedly attacked from behind, dispersed and fled. They had to leave eighty of their men dead.

Since the nineteenth century

Callander was from July 1, 1858 the terminus of a railway line from Dunblane . A second station was opened on July 1, 1870, about half a mile west of the Dreadnought Hotel , when the railway line was expanded to Killin and Oban . It was closed on November 5, 1965. The sections of the former Callander and Oban Railway between Callander and Strathyre and between Balquhidder and Killin are now part of the National Cycle Network (Route 7) and the Rob Roy Way .

Helen Duncan comes from Callander and was the last woman convicted as a witch in Europe .

Callander became famous in the 1960s as the setting for Tannochbrae in the television series Dr Finlay's Casebook .

The McLaren High School teaches students aged 12 to 18 with a catchment area of Tyndrum to Inversnaid.
