Balquhidder ( Scottish Gaelic : Both Chuidir ) is a small town in the Stirling Council Area in Scotland . It is located in the southern Highlands in the historic Perthshire region at the east end of Loch Voil at the Balvag river . Like the southern Trossachs , Balquhidder is part of Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park . The place has about 100 inhabitants.

The place is best known for the grave of Robert Roy MacGregor , called Rob Roy , who died here in 1734 and was buried in the local cemetery. Rob Roy was a folk hero of the 18th century , also known as the Scottish Robin Hood is called. Belonging to the outlawed MacGregor clan , he was eventually imprisoned as a cattle thief, but pardoned in 1727. He spent the last years of his life in Balquhidder. His grave is a popular tourist attraction. For centuries, however, the place belonged to the territory of the MacLaren clan , whose traditional burial place was the cemetery.

In the cemetery, next to the ruins of the old church, built in 1631, there is also a new church, completed in 1855. The place has a village hall ; the next school is in the neighboring town of Strathyre . In addition to two hotels, the place also has a few bed and breakfasts and self-catering cottages as accommodation options. From 1870 to 1965 Balquhidder had a railway connection; the route of the earlier Callander and Oban Railway fell victim to the Beeching Ax . The railway from Balquhidder to Crieff , which opened in 1905, had already been closed in 1951 .

The delightful surroundings of the Trossachs and the Balquhidder Glen to the west of Balquhidder are popular destinations for hikers and mountaineers, as is Loch Lubnaig south of the village. The well-known mountains in the area include the Ben Ledi , the Ben Vorlich and the Stob Binnein .
