Albert Armitage
Albert Borlase Armitage (born July 2, 1864 in Balquhidder , Perthshire , † October 31, 1943 ) was a Scottish polar explorer.
Life
The Lieutenant of the Royal Naval Reserve (RNR) was deputy expedition leader of the Jackson Harmsworth Expedition (1894-1897) under the leadership of Frederick George Jackson to explore the Franz Josef Land archipelago in the Arctic . Armitage was the first to come across Nansen and his companion Hjalmar Johansen on June 17, 1896 at Cape Flora on Northbrook Island after their unsuccessful attempt to reach the North Pole.
As second in command and navigator, he then took part in the Discovery Expedition to Antarctica under Robert Falcon Scott from 1901 to 1904.
Armitage later worked as a captain on merchant ships, including the ocean liners Salsette and Karmala of the British shipping company P&O . After him is the Armitage Saddle in the Transarctic Mountains and also Cape Armitage on Ross Island.
There is a likelihood of confusion with the Australian polar explorer Bertram Armytage , who Ernest Henry Shackleton at the Nimrod Expedition participated.
