Tarbert is a place on the Kintyre Peninsula in the Scottish Council Area Argyll and Bute . It is on the shores of East Loch Tarbert , a bay on the west bank of Loch Fyne . Tarbert is 20 km from Lochgilphead . In 2011 it had a population of 1130 residents. There are the ruins of Tarbert Castle . The name means isthmus .

The A83 , which connects the Kintyre peninsula to the trunk road network, crosses Tarbert. In the town center, the A8015 branches off to the east, which, in addition to the Tarbert ferry port, only connects a few settlements east of the town and ends on the banks of Loch Fyne. There are ferry connections to Portavadie on the east bank of Loch Fyne on the Cowal Peninsula and to Lochranza on the Isle of Arran , the latter only in summer.
