Dun Kildonan is located on the Kintyre peninsula in Argyll and Bute in Scotland , about 50 m from the east side of the B 842 (road), 11.25 km from Campbeltown between Campbeltown and Carradale, about 1.1 km south of Ugadale on the sea side Street where it can be seen in the aerial photograph.

The well-preserved dun is characteristic of the small walled fortifications of the Iron Age in the first centuries AD before Dalriada , the Kingdom of the Scots , stretched across Antrim in Northern Ireland and mid-west Scotland from 300 AD .

Unlike the mostly round duns, like Barsalloch Fort and Castle Haven , which are also in the region, it has a D-shaped floor plan. The dun measures around 19 × 13 m within the two outer, one meter high and two meter thick inner walls. The impressive entrance with the easily recognizable door construction is in the southwest. The double staircase to the wall, located inside the wall on the west side, and a round wall niche in the northeast are intact. In terms of shape and design, there are some approaches that can be seen at the same time in the brochures .

The excavation of Dun Kildonan between 1936 and 1938 resulted in an exact chronological sequence. Objects from the 1st and 2nd centuries attest to the time when the dun was built, while objects from the 6th and 9th to 12th centuries or later show that the square also remained an important focus. The finds are in the Campbeltown Museum.
