The Great Koppenkarstein is 2863 m above sea level. A. high mountain in the Dachstein Mountains above the Schladminger Glacier on the border between Styria and Upper Austria . To the west of the Großer Koppenkarstein lies the Kleine Koppenkarstein , which is 2832 m high.
location
The mountain lies on the border of the core zone of the Hallstatt – Dachstein / Salzkammergut cultural landscape , and on the Upper Austrian side it belongs to the Europe and nature reserve Dachstein ( bird protection and FFH area ), on the Styrian side to the natural monument Dachsteinsüdabsturz and Edelgrieß glacier , nature reserve northwestern part of the municipality of Ramsau am Dachstein and the conservation area Dachstein-Salzkammergut .
Ascent
The Große Koppenkarstein can be reached from the mountain station of the Dachstein-Südwandbahn , from the Austriahütte , the Guttenberghaus or the Simonyhütte .
The summit of the Koppenkarstein can be reached via via ferrata:
- Via the Westgrat via ferrata (250 m, difficulty B / C)
- Via the Irg-2 via ferrata (350 m, difficulty C / D)
Alpine experience, via ferrata and, if necessary, glacier equipment are required for the ascent.
The first documented ascent of the Großer Koppenkarstein took place on August 20, 1873 by Arthur Simony and Josef Zauner from Hallstatt over the north face ( II + ), a route that is no longer in use today.
The "Irg" climbing routes
In 2016, the Irg-1 via ferrata had to be torn down due to disagreements between the states of Upper Austria and Styria . Alternatively, the Irg-2 via ferrata (1250 m, C / D) was built, the entrance to which is a few hundred meters to the west. The name goes back to the first ascent of the Dachstein south face, Georg "Irg" Steiner .
