Benedikt Pillwein (born November 26, 1779 in Obersulz , Lower Austria , † January 27, 1847 in Linz ) was an Austrian lawyer, regional historian and author.

The Lower Austrian studied law in Salzburg and then entered the state service in Salzburg. He later moved to Linz.

Pillwein wrote for numerous newspapers and was editor of the Salzburger Staatszeitung. He also wrote religious books and put together collections of laws and legends.

Benedikt Pillwein is one of the founders of a systematic regional study of Upper Austria. In 1824 his second Linz book was published with the description of the provincial capital and its immediate surroundings , in 1846 with Linz, then and now his third. Between 1827 and 1839 he published the standard regional work History, Geography and Statistics of the Archduchy of Austria ob der Enns and the Duchy of Salzburg in five volumes.

Honors

  • In 1898 the Pillweinstrasse in Linz was named after him. It connects Dürrnbergerstrasse with Unionstrasse
