Leopold Zinnögger (born June 26, 1811 in Linz ; † July 22, 1872 there ) was an Austrian painter and botanist .

The gardener's son and his friend Johann Baptist Reiter went to the Vienna Academy in October 1830 . While studying, the two painted porcelain plates to earn money.

Zinnögger held his first exhibition together with his friend Reiter in 1835 in the Linz State Museum. He won the Heinrich Füger Prize in 1836 with a flower painting. He exhibited the picture at St. Anna's in Vienna in 1837, where he often appeared with still lifes in the following period. A copy of this picture made by the Linz flower painter Philipp Mößmer is now hanging in the Linz City Museum .

His application for a travel grant to Holland to study flower painting was rejected on July 17, 1837. So, disappointed, he turned away from flower painting and followed in his father's footsteps, while his friend Reiter stayed in Vienna.

He declined the appointment as a proofreader at the Vienna Academy, instead he joined the botanist Johann Baptiste Duftschmid and made experiments in plant breeding. This led to scientifically recognized new knowledge about the reproduction of orchids .

While he worked as a drawing teacher at the grammar school from 1849 to 1862, he kept the management of his father's gardening in hands. Later he also ran a photographic institute and also gave private lessons. He also found time for painting; so he left no fewer than 324 paintings.

Zinnögger's most famous work is Die Butte mit Trauben from 1846 in the St. Florian Gallery. In 1847 he exhibited in the trade association. He was a co-founder of the Upper Austrian Art Association in Linz, in whose first exhibition in 1851 he presented four still lifes, including a piece of fruit with squirrels, rabbits and monkeys. From then on he took part in every exhibition of the art association.

Zinnögger died at the age of 61 in his parents' house at Baumbachstrasse 12.
