Alexander Maier (born July 16, 1974 in Altenmarkt im Pongau ) is a former Austrian snowboarder . During his career he took part in two Olympic Games and four world championships, where he won a bronze medal in the discipline of snowboard cross .

biography

After finishing his career once, Alexander Maier made his debut in the Snowboard World Cup on December 4th, 1999 . He achieved his first top result in January 2000 with ninth place in the giant slalom in Schönried . In his first full World Cup season he achieved the greatest successes of his career. After a podium finish in snowboard cross , he won the bronze medal in this discipline at the World Championships in Madonna di Campiglio in January 2001 . In March he celebrated his first two World Cup victories and triumphed in the Olympic dress rehearsal in Park City and in Ruka in parallel races. He finished the season in third place in the SBX World Cup and was voted Rookie of the Year . After the end of the season he was named national champion in parallel slalom.

In the following years he was unable to continue these successes. After he celebrated his third World Cup victory in Arosa in January 2002 , he finished tenth in the parallel giant slalom at the Olympic Games . In another Olympic and three other World Cup participations, he did not get past an eleventh place on Kreischberg 2003 . On May 1st, 2008 he announced his retirement from active racing after unsatisfactory performance. In addition to his three victories, he achieved six other podium places in the World Cup, two of them in the SBX. As the best result in the Parallel World Cup, he achieved a fifth place in the 2001/02 season.

Alexander Maier is the younger brother of the former ski racer Hermann Maier and the great cousin of the former ski racer Andrea Fischbacher . After finishing his active career, the trained retail salesman took over the management of the Hermann Maier ski school in his home town of Flachau . He has been married since 2008.
