biography

Alessandra Merlin's sister, who is three years older than her, began her career with FIS races and in the European Cup . Her best result at the Junior World Championships in 1989 was fifth in the downhill. From 1991 it was also used in the World Cup . She got her first World Cup points on December 8, 1991 when she finished fourth in the giant slalom in Santa Caterina . As a result, however, she did not succeed in establishing herself at the top of the world, only occasionally achieving results among the top ten.

Merlin had her most successful season in the winter of 1994/95 . On January 22, 1995, she achieved the best World Cup result of her career when she finished the descent on the Tofana in Cortina d'Ampezzo in second place. Third place followed at the World Cup final on the Pista Stelvio in Bormio . Subsequently, there were no further podium finishes. At the 1996 World Cup in the Sierra Nevada , she was fourth in the downhill and missed a medal by nine hundredths of a second.

From 1998 Merlin started almost exclusively in the European Cup. Finally, in April 2000, on the occasion of the Italian championships, she announced her retirement from top-class sport.
