Bruno Nöckler (born October 6, 1956 in Prettau , South Tyrol ; † August 17, 1982 in Ohakune , New Zealand ) was an Italian ski racer . He took part in the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid and achieved two podiums in the World Cup . He specialized in the technical disciplines of giant slalom and slalom .

biography

The rear of the Ahrntal originating Bruno Nöckler went on 15 December 1975 in sixth place in the World Cup -Slalom of Sterzing first time in the points. With further placements among the top ten, he established himself at the top of the world and was one of the most consistent technology specialists in the World Cup in the years that followed. On February 27, 1977, he achieved his first podium finish in Furano with third place behind Klaus Heidegger and Ingemar Stenmark . At the end of the season he finished third behind the Austrians Manfred Brunner and Heidegger in the parallel slalom in the Sierra Nevada, which is only part of the Nations Cup .

In the winters that followed, his main focus shifted increasingly towards giant slalom. With consistent results in the top 10, he qualified for the 1978 World Cup in Garmisch , where he finished the giant slalom in tenth place. In 1979 he finished ninth in the prestigious slalom on the Kitzbühel Ganslernhang and even fifth in 1980. At the Olympic Games in Lake Placid , he finished sixth in the giant slalom. 0.44 seconds separated him from the bronze medal. In the slalom he was eliminated in the first round. Due to the new FIS regulations, he landed in the points even more often and completed his most successful season in 1980/81 : Almost four years after his first podium, he was third in the giant slalom from Voss behind Stenmark and Alexander Schirow a second time. There were also eight further placements among the top ten. Nöckler finished the season in seventh place in the discipline ranking and 16th in the overall World Cup. He crowned the winter with his first and only national champion title in slalom by beating Paolo De Chiesa .

In the 1981/82 season his results waned a little. By February he was twice in the top ten and thus fulfilled the norm for participation in the World Championships in Schladming . In the giant slalom he achieved his best result at a major event in fifth place - 0.38 seconds behind the bronze medal. He was also ninth in the combination , which was held for the first time in a new mode.

In August 1982 the Italian team was in New Zealand for training purposes . During his stay at Mount Hutt , Nöckler was able to convince with two victories in FIS giant slalom . Due to the poor snow conditions in Australia , the team did not move there as planned, but instead moved to New Zealand's North Island .

On August 17, the Italian minibus collided head-on with an oncoming car near Ohakune on the southern slope of Mount Ruapehu , in which a family of five was sitting. Bruno Nöckler and the trainers / supervisors Ilario Pegorari and Karl Pichler were dead on the spot. The masseur Ivano Ruzza and the driver of the car were taken to hospital with serious injuries, Ruzza later died of it. Only 17-year-old runner Carlo Gerosa got away with minor injuries. On the morning of the following day, head coach Sepp Messner called the President of the Italian Ski Association , Arrigo Gattai , about the fatal traffic accident in Tongariro National Park .

Luge athlete and Olympic medalist Siegfried Mair , who also died in a car accident in 1977, was Bruno Nöckler's brother-in-law.
