Arrigo Gattai (born April 17, 1928 in Milan , † September 21, 2012 ibid) was an Italian sports official, president of the Italian Ski Federation and the National Olympic Committee (CONI).

Life

Gattai was an alpine skier. After graduating from high school and studying law, he settled in Milan as a lawyer. In 1955 he met the president of Inter Milan, Angelo Moratti , and became the legal advisor of their football club. In 1964 he ran on the list of the Movimento Sociale Italiano for the City Council of Milan, but was not elected. He was particularly close to Bettino Craxi , who promoted his entry into national sports politics. From 1967 to 1970 he was a member of the board of the Italian Football Association ( Federazione Italiana Giuoco Calcio ), then from 1972 Vice President, from 1976 President of the Italian Ski Association ( Federazione Italiana Sport Invernali ). From 1978 he was Vice President and from 1987 to 1993 President of the Comitato Olimpico Nazionale Italiano CONI. During this time the Italian triumphs in winter sports fell (with Alberto Tomba , among others ), but also the decline at the Summer Olympics in 1988 and 1992. Due to the poor performance in 1992, he was subsequently voted out. Gustav Thöni said after the death Gattais, for him he always remained the president. The Italian sport commemorated it with a minute's silence throughout the sport of Italy.
