The Mawson Peninsula is a narrow, icy and up to 455 m high peninsula on the west side of the Slava Ice Shelf on the East Antarctic George V coast . It extends over a length of 48 km to Cape Hudson in a north-westerly direction in the Somow Sea of the Southern Ocean .
The first aerial photographs of the peninsula were taken during Operation Highjump (1946–1947). The Australian polar explorer Phillip Law undertook another overflight for mapping purposes in February 1959. The Antarctic Names Committee of Australia (ANCA) named the peninsula after the Australian polar explorer Douglas Mawson (1882-1958).
