Angelo Moratti (born November 5, 1909 in Somma Lombardo , † August 12, 1981 in Viareggio ) was an Italian entrepreneur and football official .

biography

Moratti tried his hand at entrepreneurship as a teenager and worked in various industries. After gaining a foothold in the oil trade in the 1930s , he developed into one of the most important players in the energy sector in Italy in the following years. He made a fortune as the owner of coal mines , oil refineries and power plants. In 1962 he founded the energy company Saras out of his individual companies , which over time has become one of the largest companies in Italy. During the energy crisis in the early 1970s, he also expanded his business into the media industry and was involved in the Corriere della Sera newspaper and the Rizzoli publishing house .

From the 1950s onwards, Moratti supported his favorite club, Inter Milan , whose fortunes he headed as president from 1955. He initiated one of the most successful phases in the club's history, crowned by three Italian championships, twice winning the European Cup and the World Cup . In 1968 he was inherited by Ivanoe Fraizzoli . In his honor, a square in front of the Giuseppe Meazza Stadium was renamed in November 2007 and has since been known as Piazzale Angelo Moratti . The club's training center is also called Centro Sportivo Angelo Moratti .
