Erika Hess' two years younger cousin competed in the World Cup from 1981 . She got her first World Cup points on December 22, 1981 when she was tenth in the giant slalom in Chamonix . She started in the same discipline at the 1982 World Cup in Schladming . She was second behind her cousin after the first run, but was eliminated in the second run. At the Junior World Championship in Auron , held a month later , Hess won the silver medal in slalom. In the World Cup she was regularly placed in the front midfield, and on December 14, 1983 she made it onto the podium for the first time in the Sestriere slalom .
Hess took part in the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo , where she finished 11th in slalom and 15th in giant slalom. The only World Cup victory she succeeded on January 26, 1986, when she decided a combined classification, which was composed of a Super-G in Megève and a slalom in Saint-Gervais-les-Bains .
At the end of the 1986/87 season, Hess announced her resignation. She was on the board of the Nidwalden Ski Association for several years . Today she presides in her home town of Hergiswil the association for the promotion of talented youngsters, which promotes talented young people.
