Egon Hirt (born August 16, 1960 in Neustadt in the Black Forest ) is a former German ski racer . In the early 1980s he was one of the best technicians on the German national ski team. Between 1981 and 1984 he was three times German champion in giant slalom.
biography
Hirt was born the son of a sporting goods retailer and grew up in the Black Forest . He contested his first race at the age of six for his hometown club SC Neustadt. His above-average talent was already evident as a teenager: in 1972 he became German Alpine Schoolchampion, four years later German Youth Champion in slalom and third in the European Junior Championships in Gällivare .
His first major success in the men's area came in 1981 when he won the German championship in giant slalom and a second place in slalom. Two more championship titles in giant slalom followed in 1982 and 1984. Although he was one of the best technicians nationally, his performance in the World Cup remained little constant. He was in the top ten only three times. The best place was a ninth place in the giant slalom in Todtnau, his home country, in February 1983. At the World Championships and the Olympic Games, Hirt initially only ended up behind the top group. In 1982 at the World Championships in Schladming he was 15th in slalom and 13th in giant slalom at the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo .
In 1985, at the World Cup in Bormio, Italy, he achieved one of the best results for a German ski racer since the 1978 World Cup in his own country. In the giant slalom, he surprisingly finished fourth. Despite the greatest success of his active career, his performance received little public attention, as his teammate Markus Wasmeier laid the foundation for his successful career with the world championship title in the same race - the first for the German men's team in 21 years.
At the height of his career, Hirt announced his retirement from the national team and focused on his training as a ski instructor. After taking the state ski instructor examination, he was accepted into the teaching team of the German Ski Instructor Association in 1986 . Today he runs the sports store he took over from his parents and runs snow sports schools in Waldau and on the Feldberg in the Black Forest.
