Michael Veith (born January 20, 1957 in Tegernsee ) is a former German ski racer . Together with Sepp Ferstl, he was the best German downhill skier in the 1970s and 1980s. Veith was a member of the A-squad of the German Ski Association from 1973 to 1982 , became vice world champion in the downhill in 1978 and achieved four podium places in the ski world cup .

biography

Veith celebrated his first successes in 1973 at the German youth championships. He won the slalom and the giant slalom and was third in the downhill. In the further course of his career he mainly focused on the downhill. At the age of 17, the German competed in a major event for the first time. At the 1974 World Cup in St. Moritz , he finished in 21st downhill rank.

In November 1974 Veith won the European Cup run in Montgenèvre . Shortly afterwards he scored his first points in the World Cup in Val-d'Isère when he immediately finished third behind the Austrians Klammer and Grissmann in the first descent of the 1974/75 season . After further top 10 results in two runs and two combinations, he achieved his best ever World Cup result on March 9, 1975. In the downhill from Jackson Hole he finished second behind Franz Klammer and just ahead of Swiss René Berthod . The then 18-year-old came in seventh in the Downhill World Cup as the best German and 13th in the overall World Cup, also as the best in his country. In January 1975, Veith became the European Junior Downhill Champion by a large margin over the Austrian Leonhard Stock .

In the 1975/76 season Veith did not quite come close to his previous year's results. His best results were fifth in the two downhill runs from Wengen . At the 1976 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck he came in 22nd. In the next winter , he narrowly missed the podium twice. He finished fourth both in the downhill from Laax and in the combination from St. Anton . In 1977 Veith graduated from the ski school in Berchtesgaden with the Abitur . The 1977/78 season was again very successful for the German. In the downhill runs from Kitzbühel and Les Houches he took third place, although on the Streif he was only four hundredths of a second slower than the two simultaneous winners Sepp Ferstl and Josef Walcher . With a further two top 10 placements, like three years ago, he came seventh in the Downhill World Cup. He celebrated the greatest success of his career at the 1978 World Cup in Garmisch-Partenkirchen . On the Kandahar slope , he won the silver medal in the downhill, seven hundredths behind Josef Walcher.

In the next few years he could not repeat this achievement. In the 1978/79 season Veith was only twice in the top ten. His best result was eighth place in the downhill from Val Gardena , which meant that he fell significantly behind in the Downhill World Cup. In the winter of 1979/80 , ninth place in Lake Louise was his best result. With a further four placements among the top twelve, however, as the best German, he reached tenth place in the downhill ranking. At the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid , he finished 23rd downhill. In the 1980/81 season his best results were two eighth places in the second descent from Val Gardena and Garmisch-Partenkirchen. In the winter of 1981/82 Veith did not finish in the top 15 in any race and thus did not get any World Cup points for the entire season. At the 1982 World Championships in Schladming , he came 17th in the downhill and 44th in the combination. He finished the combined descent in 13th place, but in the combined slalom he only finished 56th and last. After the season Veith ended his career in the Ski World Cup. He switched to professional races, in which he participated until 1985. That year he also competed in the professional world championship.

Following his sporting career, Veith completed an apprenticeship as a marketing clerk and founded the company Michael Veith Sportmarketing in 1987 , which merged with the Hamburg event agency Upsolut Sports GmbH in 2000 and was converted into Upsolut Sports AG . In the early 1990s he was also a commentator for the sports channel .
