Anni Kronbichler (born March 22, 1963 in Kufstein ) is a former Austrian ski racer . She was a successful slalom runner in the 1980s and won three World Cup races . Her best result was fourth at world championships and eighth at Winter Olympics . In 1982 she became Austrian champion in giant slalom .

Career

Kronbichler had his first international successes at the age of 16 in the winter of 1979/1980. She won a slalom in the European Cup in Liberec and reached third place in the slalom classification. At the European Junior Championships in Madonna di Campiglio in 1980 , she just missed a medal as fourth in the giant slalom. In the same winter, she made her first appearances in the World Cup and won World Cup points for the first time with twelfth place in the slalom in Vysoké Tatry on March 8, 1980. She was lucky in misfortune on December 13, 1980 after entering the World Cup slalom in Piancavallo : She was caught in the finish area by a wire rope from a banner that had just been drawn up, which split her upper lip twice; a German doctor brought her to the clinic. As the doctor reported, a disaster would have occurred if the wire rope had been 10 cm deeper at the time she came down. In said next World Cup season, she finished ninth in the giant slalom in Haute-Nendaz on January 22, 1981, and was among the top ten for the first time. In addition, she also started in the European Cup and won two slaloms in Ramsau and Bled in the 1980/81 season .

In the 1981/82 World Cup season , Kronbichler finally made it to the top of the world in her strongest discipline, slalom, which she proved with two second places in Saint-Gervais-les-Bains and Lenggries and seventh place in the Slalom World Cup. In addition, she became Austrian state champion in giant slalom, after having been junior slalom champion the previous year. At the 1982 World Championships in Schladming , however, she only came in 18th place in slalom and was eliminated in giant slalom. In the combination she achieved sixth place with the fifth best slalom time. In the 1982/83 season things continued to improve for the Tyrolean and she celebrated her first World Cup victory in the slalom of the gold key race in Schruns on January 16 . Thanks to her consistently good results (in seven of the nine slaloms she was among the top ten), she achieved sixth place in the Slalom World Cup. With further good results in the other disciplines, including two fourth places in the giant slalom in Mont-Tremblant and in the combination of San Sicario / Piancavallo as well as a ninth place in the first women's Super-G in the history of the World Cup in Verbier , she reached eleventh place in the overall World Cup Space. Kronbichler had won the slalom in Sestriere at the World Series of Skiing on November 28, 1985 , but these races only counted for the Nations Cup.

Anni Kronbichler achieved her second World Cup victory on January 22, 1984 in the Verbier slalom, but in the 1983/84 season she fell back to tenth place in the Slalom World Cup . Her relapse in the overall World Cup was even clearer, as she concentrated more and more on the slalom and only competed in a few other races. From the 1984/85 season she only started in the slalom, but this winter her performances were no longer as consistent as before and she was only among the top ten in three races. Her best result of the season was the third place in Waterville Valley , in the Slalom World Cup she finished 15th. At the Olympic Winter Games in Sarajevo in 1984 , as at the 1982 World Cup, she fell short of expectations. In the slalom she only reached eighth place after she was still third in the first round, and in the giant slalom she finished 14th. Things went better at the 1985 World Championships in Bormio , where she came fourth in the slalom, however, a medal by two Tenth of a second missed. After Kronbichler had not scored any points at the beginning of the 1985/86 season , she won a World Cup slalom for the third and last time on January 12, 1986 at the silver jug races in Bad Gastein . In February she was twice in the top ten and thanks to her victory she was able to improve again to eleventh place in the Slalom World Cup.

After the birth of their son, Kronbichler took a break and did not take part in any competitions during the entire winter of 1986/87. In the next winter she made her comeback in the World Cup, which initially looked promising with fourth place in Leukerbad , but afterwards she never finished in the top 15 or missed her last chance by failing in the first round of the slalom in Kranjska Gora (January 30th), which is why she did not qualify for the Olympic Winter Games in 1988 . In the winter of 1988/89 she was completely without World Cup points, after which she announced her resignation in the spring of 1989.
After her active career, she completed her training as a ski instructor and ski guide as well as a health and nurse . For several years she headed the ski school in Walchsee .
