The Ganzstein Tunnel is a motorway tunnel in Austria . The two-tube tunnel bypasses the city of Mürzzuschlag (in Styria ) as part of the Semmering expressway S6. It is 2.1 km long. The average traffic volume is 12,500 vehicles per day (as of 2008). The tunnel has an emergency exit that connects to the ring road and leads into the village.

The first tube was built from 1976 to 1980. The single-tube tunnel was repeatedly criticized for safety deficiencies. Due to the high volume of traffic, the construction of a second tube was necessary in accordance with the EU Tunnel Directive.

On December 4, 2005, the ground-breaking ceremony for the second tube, the southern tube, took place in Mürzzuschlag. The southern tube was opened to traffic on July 29, 2008. The distance between the two tubes of the tunnel is up to 60 meters. After the renovation of the north tube, the fully completed Ganzstein tunnel was opened to traffic on March 27, 2009. The total costs for this amounted to 70 million euros, of which 58 million were for the construction of the south tube and 12 million for the renovation of the existing north tube.
