The New People's Party ( Japanese 国民 新 党 , Kokumin Shintō , English The People's New Party ) was a small political party in Japan that was founded in August 2005 by opponents of post-privatization. The so-called "rebels" had previously been excluded from the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) by Prime Minister Jun'ichirō Koizumi . It broke up in March 2013.

A revision of post-privatization and other reforms to liberalize the economy of the Koizumi cabinets are still among the party's core demands. In socio-political terms , she takes traditional conservative positions: she rejects the right to vote for foreigners in prefectures and municipalities, as well as the admission of different family names for married couples. In the social systems she wants to achieve a "return of security" ( 安心 の 回復 , anshin no kaifuku ).

The New People's Party attracted international attention in 2007 when it nominated Alberto Fujimori, who was under arrest in Chile, as a candidate for the upper house elections.

The first party leader was Tamisuke Watanuki , who resigned after losing his parliamentary seat in the 2009 general election and was replaced by Shizuka Kamei . General Secretary Hisaoki Kamei also lost his MP in this election. His successor was first the House of Lords Shōzaburō Jimi , then in 2010 Mikio Shimoji .

In 2007 the party had four MPs each in the upper and lower house , but after the 2009 lower house elections it is only represented there by 3 MPs. Since then she has been represented in the cabinet by a coalition with the Democratic Party , initially with party chairman Kamei, and since 2010 by ex-general secretary Jimi. In April 2011, the party chairman Kamei and the political research council chairman Akiko Kamei were removed from their offices because of their opposition to the VAT increase decided by the coalition cabinet. Kamei had told the Democratic Party against a party decision to remain in the coalition that the New People's Party would leave the coalition. Both Kameis then submitted their withdrawal from the party.

In the 2012 general election , the party only won one constituency in Kagoshima. Takeshi Noma left the party in February 2013, leaving her with two members of the House of Lords. In March 2013, the party disbanded following a decision by Chairman Jimi. The other party member Kazuyuki Hamada did not support the decision to dissolve.
