Hartmut Skerbisch (* 1945 in Ramsau am Dachstein , Styria , † April 3, 2009 in Kalsdorf Castle ) was an Austrian artist .

Life

Hartmut Skerbisch spent his childhood in Deutschlandsberg in Styria. He studied architecture at TU Graz . From 1969 he worked as an artist, working primarily with videos, photographs and sculptural elements. His works became known beyond Austria's borders through exhibitions. Most recently Skerbisch lived in Kalsdorf Castle near Ilz in Eastern Styria . There he succumbed to a long, serious illness in 2009.

His best-known works include the lightsaber in front of the opera on the Opernring in Graz , erected for the Styrian autumn of 1992, the solar tree (1998) on the main square in Gleisdorf and THE GARDEN LABYRINTH in the Dr.-Schlossar-Park (Auf der Tändelwiese) in Graz from 2004–2007 . Kunstgarten Graz was able to win Hartmut Skerbisch for this project and, with the support of the Institute for Art in Public Space, erect this living solar sculpture on 2400 m² with 1800 Buxus sempervirens plants and a stainless steel sculpture in the center. kunstGarten was responsible for the construction and maintenance until 2011. Skerbisch is considered to be one of the most prominent contemporary visual artists in Austria, whose works always have a political intention.
