history

The place is first mentioned in 1342 as Nestelpach and 1351 as Nezzelbach owned by the Riegersburg rulership. The village consisted of a courtyard to which a single-row farming village was attached, a type of settlement that dates back to before the 12th century. The Hof zu Nestelbach is still mentioned in 1542, and the cadastre from 1822 even shows its farm fields. Nestelbach was constantly exposed to enemy attacks from the east. During the devastating Kuruzzen incursion in 1704 the place was plundered and ten farms burned down.

Since the villages and localities were part of the lordship of Feistritz near Ilz and Riegersburg for centuries, they are not mentioned in writing until late.

Eichberg is mentioned in 1400 by the chaplain foundation in Feistritz Castle. The founding of the neighboring village Hochenegg (Hohenek), where half a farmstead was also donated to Feistritz, can be defined as a two-row street village for the first half of the 12th century.

The places built in more favorable valley locations prove to be older, not least because of the type of settlement. This applies to Hofing, a divided manor, as it does to Mutzenfeld, which itself emerged from a founding farm and whose farm fields are on the other side of the Ilz .

Mutzenfeld, his name was formed from an old German nickname (Moda = courage), was first mentioned in a document in 1325 when the Salzburger von Salzburger fiefs were awarded to Leo von Raning. There was a lignite mining here, the mine was closed in 1964.

Buildings

Köckenbründl with chapel
Uhlheim Castle
  • The "Köckenbründl", first mentioned in 1647 and popular as a place of worship, is located in the forest between Nestelbach and Nestelberg . The original wooden marterl with the image of the Virgin Mary, placed next to the fountain, was replaced by Anton Meister and Guttätern in 1859 with a chapel dedicated to the Holy Virgin Mary, which was renovated by Karl Prem in 1947.
  • The elongated building of “Schloss Uhlheim” from the middle of the 19th century never achieved historical significance. The building, which was built in the style of historicism , has the character of a city villa, but it was associated with extensive agriculture at the time. Due to its late construction, the complex does not have any fortifications.
At the front of the two-story castle, two tower-like corner buildings emerge. The central zone is emphasized by a simple triangular gable. Inside there is a hall as well as several representative rooms that are accessed by wide stairs. The castle's wine cellar holds over 2.5 million liters of wine.
The land on which the castle stands belonged to the Kalsdorf rule. From 1846 to 1864 it was owned by Josef Ritter von Uhl, a wealthy Viennese personality as the owner of the post office shelf for Vienna. He is also considered the builder of the small castle that has been named after him ever since. After the owner's death, Uhlheim Castle was first taken over by his youngest son and then by his brother-in-law. In 1956 Karl and Juliane Maier bought the property and converted it into a model winery and a wine wholesaler.

politics

The last mayor of the community was August Friedheim until December 31, 2014.

coat of arms

The coat of arms was awarded on October 30, 1989. The blazon (description of the coat of arms) reads:

"Divided by gold and green in a wave cut, above five (3: 2) black plowshares, below three blooming golden nettles."

It is a so-called "talking coat of arms"; the five plowshares, also standing for the five cadastral communities, express the creation of a cultural landscape from a primeval landscape (nettles). The wave cut denotes the division of the Ilz valley by the Ilzbach.
