history

The Kunstraum Kreuzberg / Bethanien is located in the former Bethanien Deaconess Hospital on Mariannenplatz, which was built in 1847 . The Bethanien, which was built in 1847 at the instigation of Friedrich-Wilhelm IV. According to plans by Theodor August Stein as a deaconess hospital, at that time still outside the city gates, functioned as a hospital until 1970. With the closure of the hospital in 1970, the "fight for Bethanien" began, in which the planned large-scale demolition and a new building with social housing were prevented by occupation, citizens' initiatives and monument conservationists. Since then, mainly cultural and artistic institutions have worked in the main building. In addition to the Kunstraum Kreuzberg / Bethanien (until 2001 under the name Kunstamt Kreuzberg / Bethanien), the printing workshop of the BBK Berlin's Kulturwerk , Künstlerhaus Bethanien GmbH (until June 2010) and the Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg Music School are located here.

Since May 1, 2009, the GSE (Gesellschaft für StadtEntwickige non-profit GmbH, Treuhänder Berlins) has taken over the management of the Bethanien and involves the tenants of the Bethanien in tenant councils in the conceptual development of the building as an advanced center of artistic production and presentation. Anchor users are and will continue to be the bbk's printing workshop, the Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg music school and the Kreuzberg / Bethanien art space. Further cultural and artistic uses follow as the space becomes available. Stéphane Bauer has been director of the Kreuzberg / Bethanien art space since 2002 and is responsible for the program and organization.

program

With 450 m² of exhibition space and more than 200 running meters of hanging space, the rooms meet the requirements for medium-sized shows . Around six exhibition projects are realized each year, some of them together with cooperating institutions, curators or artist groups. The exhibitions are accompanied by guided tours, films, discussions and artist talks.

Cultural education projects are an integral part of the mediation work of the Kreuzberg / Bethanien art space. This particularly includes partnerships with schools.
