Printing workshop in the Kulturwerk of the bbk berlin

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The printing workshop was founded in 1975, making it the oldest of the three workshops operated by the culture department of the bbk berlin . With the help of public funds, it was refurbished and expanded in the premises of the Kunstquartier Bethanien on Mariannenplatz in Berlin-Kreuzberg. The Berlin Senate Chancellery for Cultural Affairs finances the printing workshop as an infrastructural measure for the visual arts.

All Bethanien workshops are available to professional artists from Germany and abroad for a small fee. This makes it one of the largest non-commercial artistic institutions in the printing sector worldwide. In a comparison of various funding and advisory services offered by the city of Berlin, the printing and sculpture workshops of the bbk berlin also proved to be the best-known and best-rated. The Slade School of Fine Art mediates the offer to its graduates.

Renowned artists such as Elvira Bach , Bruce McLean , KH Hödicke and AR Penck have produced their works there. In addition to local artists, international artists who received a studio grant from the DAAD at Künstlerhaus Bethanien also used the printing workshop such as B. Katrin von Maltzahn for her hyperpaintings or Rémy Zaugg for a larger screen printing cycle.

Mathias Mrowka is currently in charge of the printing workshop.

The offer of the printing workshop includes both traditional and modern printing techniques.

The workrooms for screen printing , etching as well as computers and various printers are located on the upper floor of the Bethany. In the basement there are the workrooms for lithography , letterpress printing , paper production , the photo laboratory and the bookbinding workshop . There the printing workshop shares the premises with the media workshop . The combination of the areas of printing and bookbinding enabled the creation of artist's books in small and very small editions, including works for Edition Mariannenpresse from 1979 to 2009 , most recently published by the Literaturhaus Berlin .

If necessary, the artists are introduced to the work by the workshop managers and assisted in the implementation of complex and experimental projects, e.g. B. in the combination of different materials supported. In addition, numerous workshops, seminars and events are offered every month.

One copy of every edition produced in the printing workshop is retained for the archive. With over 5,000 works, it represents an important collection of contemporary prints. On certain occasions, archive work is exhibited in the rooms of the printing workshop, including the works of KH Hödicke , Elvira Bach , and Bruce McLean .

International projects promote cultural exchange such as For example, the Glasgow-Berlin project, where the English artist Jo Ganter conveyed his special technique in a workshop in Berlin.

Guided tours through the printing and media workshop are offered free of charge on request for schoolchildren, students and all other interested groups and are part of the regular program.

financing

Herbert Mondry, chairman of bbk berlin until May 2016, formulated the original idea behind the founding of the printing and sculpture workshop: "Artists need means of production." Even today, artistic production in Berlin is supported by the provision and promotion of the printing workshop as an artistic work space by the cultural work of the bbk.

In 2007, the Bethanien's printing workshop and sculptor's workshop received funding of around 600,000 euros from the advisory board of the Deutsche Klassenlotterie Foundation in order to secure the preservation of the existing facility and promote the acquisition of modern technology. This made it possible to set up a technical center for video art with editing suites and a bluebox.

Herbert Mondry said of the support and role of the workshops for the city of Berlin: “Berlin is a central location for artistic production. The workshops of the Kulturwerk play a major role in this. Politicians in Berlin, represented on the Lotto Foundation's advisory board, have recognized this and have now enabled both workshops to make investments that point into the future of artistic techniques. For the professional artists in Berlin, who often work under very difficult economic conditions, this funding decision is a support and a signal of encouragement. "
