Rémy Zaugg (born January 11, 1943 in Courgenay ; † August 23, 2005 in Arlesheim ) was a Swiss painter and was best known as a conceptual artist .

Life

Rémy Zaugg - a descendant of Mennonites - attended the arts and crafts school in Basel after graduating from high school in Porrentruy . In 1970 and 1971 he received the Federal Art Scholarship . Zaugg lived and worked in Basel and Pfastatt , near Mulhouse.

In his conceptual works, Zaugg dealt with perception, which was not limited to seeing, but saw people in a reciprocal relationship to the world. His work includes paintings , works on paper , sculptures in public spaces, art in construction projects ( Basel-Stadt State Archives , Aargauer Kunsthaus ), urbanistic analyzes and architectural designs.

His debates on art theory, especially the book Das Kunstmuseum, which I dream of. Or The Place of Work and Man (1987) are standard texts today for art connoisseurs, art historians and artists. Zaugg has always questioned all generally accepted certainties. In 1990 he received the Art Prize of the City of Basel .

His collaboration with the architects Herzog & de Meuron , with whom he realized around 15 projects in the years before his death, including the extension of the Aargauer Kunsthaus in Aarau, received international attention . The studio Rémy Zaugg in Mulhouse-Pfastatt, designed by Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron, was presented as part of the 2001 Pritzker Prize awarded to Herzog & de Meuron.

In addition to his artistic activities, he was a recognized exhibition organizer and, for example, organized the comprehensive Alberto Giacometti retrospective of 1991 in Paris.
