As the youngest of the three workshops of the bbk berlin, it was initially set up in 2008 as a department of the printing workshop located in the Kunstquartier Bethanien in Berlin-Kreuzberg . The workshops are funded by the Berlin Senate Chancellery for Cultural Affairs . The media workshop is run by Sandra Becker and Lioba von den Driesch.

History of the workshop

The printing workshop and the sculpting workshop have been supporting the visual arts with infrastructure for decades. In the 1990s there were no subsidized work opportunities for artistic work with analog and digital media. Editing rooms were priceless back then. That is why the media artists got together and called for the media workshop back in the 1990s. There were many committed and several concepts that were gradually evaluated. Ultimately, however, there was a lack of overall financing, so that the media workshop was initially set up with only four workstations and a green screen studio as a department in the former offices of the printing workshop of bbk Berlin in the basement in Bethanien. A multifunctional room was planned to provide space for a wide variety of work techniques. In 2008, the realization of the media workshop began. The need to further develop such jobs is described in 2003 as follows: "High-quality production facilities for media art can currently be found nationwide almost exclusively at academies and universities reserved for enrolled students. More and more media artists are being adequately trained, but are being trained Completion of her studies the foundations of artistic production are missing. "

activities

The workshop offers various digital and analog workplaces, a green screen studio, know-how and space as well as technical infrastructure for artists who work with media. In addition, she organizes network meetings , seminars and workshops in her rooms in the Kreuzberger Kunstquartier Bethanien . It offers advice and assistance in the field of media art. It mediates and supports cooperation and networking between media professionals. A so-called expert pool , consisting of 20 media artists, can support projects with assistance if necessary. Regular collaborations with the international film and media art festival Directors Lounge as well as trade fair appearances promote social awareness of media competence. The focus is on the critical concept of media. Monthly lectures as part of the network meetings complete the offer. The media workshop creates space for innovative projects such as B. in the control room of the former heating power plant in Berlin-Mitte.

The media workshop counts with the FabLab u. a. to the Grassroot Labs in Berlin. These have a democratic tradition and were developed from the grassroots. They are a help for self-help in the sense of DIY . Do it yourself as a principle is inherent in media art, as there is hardly any institutional help in the form of funding and reception for this relatively new art form. Much of this work has already disappeared and could not be archived because the media carriers such as VHS cassettes e.g. B. dissolve after a certain time. The media workshop digitizes a. a. these older formats and thus makes them available for the future.

The media workshop brings together the media art scene in a city that has a long international art tradition. For 40 years, media art afford artists and artists critical contributions to digitization. Media art includes media artistic forms of expression that differ from classical painting and sculpture in that they use technical media and are often interdisciplinary. It goes from net art to experimental film and video as well as sound installations. The media workshop as infrastructural support and knowledge transfer for self-help is described in the "Art Forum", the specialist journal for visual arts.
